OK, here's what I do to rip and "digitalize" my DVD collection: I rip my dvd's using RipIt, so it gets me a clean, 100% copy of the original DVD (minus the protection). Then I use DVD2OneX to extract only the movie (I don't care about extras, special features, etc). The result is a 2.5-4.5GB .VOB file that plays fine in my PS3 and VLC. I like to have a .VOB file because in the rare ocassion that I need to burn a copy of the dvd I just ripped (If i need it to play on a DVD player), I am able to do so using Toast. I use handbrake for my iPhone encondes, but I dont like the idea of having a .mp4 file that only plays on computers and/or PS3 (again, if i ever need to burn a copy to a dvd I would love to do so, don't think I can do it with a .mp4 file?) I would like to use Front Row to manage my movies, but it doesn't play any.VOB files (funny enough, it plays Video_TS folders which include .VOB files). Anyways, is there a way for Front Row or ATV to play these type of files? I've heard about Plex but never used it, is it a good choice? Thanks in advance for all the help... __________________ iPhone 4 MBP 13' iPod Classic 80GB 0 PBKILLER View Public Profile Find More Posts by PBKILLER Apr 5, 2010, 09:31 PM #2 PBKILLER Thread Starter macrumors regular Join Date: Aug 2007 Location: Puerto Rico Well, I downloaded Plex and I was able to play a .VOB file without any problems, besides the fact that the program is a little complicated to set up. Would still like to use the native Front Row application as it;'s easier to deal with. __________________ iPhone 4 MBP 13' iPod Classic 80GB 0 PBKILLER View Public Profile Find More Posts by PBKILLER Apr 5, 2010, 10:00 PM #3 daze macrumors 6502 Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Toronto, Canada I know this is not what you were asking but I thought I'd suggest this anyway... You should pick up a WD TV Live. It plays all formats without issue and is relatively inexpensive. I picked mine up in Toronto for $129. For DVDs, what I do is that I use MakeMKV and convert them to an MKV file which is extremely fast since it does not re-encode video. An added benefit is that it supports multiple audio streams and subtitles. 0 daze View Public Profile Find More Posts by daze Apr 6, 2010, 02:31 PM #4 PBKILLER Thread Starter macrumors regular Join Date: Aug 2007 Location: Puerto Rico Well, after downloading Plex and spending the nite tweaking it's settings... Gotta say I love it! It's much better than Front Row. It even let's you program the Apple remote so when you press MENU, it activates Plex and not the Front Row program. I was able to have a folder with AVI, VOB & mp4 files and they all play without a hiccup. Great software! __________________ iPhone 4 MBP 13' iPod Classic 80GB 0 PBKILLER View Public Profile Find More Posts by PBKILLER Apr 6, 2010, 02:37 PM #5 daze macrumors 6502 Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Toronto, Canada Plex is quite nice. I like it even more than Boxee or even XBMC. 0 daze View Public Profile Find More Posts by daze MacRumors Forums > Apple Hardware > Apple TV and Home Theater « Previous Thread | Next Thread » Thread Tools Show Printable Version Display Modes Linear Mode Switch to Hybrid Mode Switch to Threaded Mode Search this Thread Advanced Search Posting Rules You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts BB code is On Smilies are On [IMG] code is On HTML code is Off Forum Rules Forum Jump User Control Panel Private Messages Subscriptions Who's Online Search Forums Forums Home News and Article Discussion MacRumors.com News Discussion Mac Blog Discussion iOS Blog Discussion iPhone, iPod and iPad iOS iOS 7 iOS 6 iOS 5 and earlier Jailbreaks and iOS Hacks iPhone iPhone Tips, Help and Troubleshooting iPhone Accessories iPhone Launch Meetups iPhone Wallpapers etc. iPad iPad Tips, Help and Troubleshooting iPad Accessories iPad Launch Meetups iPad Wallpapers etc. iPad Apps iPod touch iPod touch Accessories iPod Alternatives to iOS and iOS Devices Apple Applications iPhone and iPod touch Apps iPad Apps Mac Applications and Mac App Store Apple Hardware Desktops iMac Mac Pro Mac mini Notebooks MacBook MacBook Pro MacBook Air PowerPC Macs Apple TV and Home Theater Mac Peripherals Buying Tips and Advice Apple Systems and Services Mac Basics and Help OS X OS X Mavericks (10.9) OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Mac OS X Server, Xserve, and Networking iCloud and Apple Services Windows, Linux & Others on the Mac Programming iPhone/iPad Programming Mac Programming App Store Business, Legal and Marketıng Special Interests Mac and PC Games Console Games Digital Audio Visual Media Design and Graphics Digital Photography Digital Video Web Design and Development Apple Collectors Distributed Computing Mac Community Community Discussion Apple, Industry and Internet Discussion Current Events Politics, Religion, Social Issues Picture Gallery UI Customization Site and Forum Feedback Mac Guides Private Forums Archive Wasteland Archives of Old Posts MacRumors News Discussion (archive) MacBytes.com News Discussion Buying Tips, Advice and Discussion (archive) Community Daily Tunes Site Discussion and Feedback Event Archives Macworld San Francisco 2008 Games General Mac Discussion Hardware Rumors iPhone Purchaser Meetups Leopard Event Meetups Mac Help/Tips Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) Discussion Mac Scene Macintosh Computers MacRumors Old Skool Marketplace Archive 1 (Posts count) Marketplace Archive 2 iPhone Marketplace Archive Music Discussion New Mac Application Announcements Product Recommendations/Reviews Site News Switch Stories Web Design and Development (archive) Past Contests 1,000,000 Post Contest 2,000,000 Post Contest 3,000,000 Post Contest 4,000,000 Post Contest 5,000,000 Post Contest Ten Million Post Contest Similar Threads thread Thread Starter Forum Replies Last Post No cover flow or front row in today's presenation strangeday iPad 0 Jan 28, 2010 01:15 AM Playing a .VOB file in PowerPoint hurricanekate2 Mac Applications and Mac App Store 0 May 10, 2009 11:55 AM A web browser worthy of Boxee and/or Front Row tkambitsch Apple TV and Home Theater 1 Jan 18, 2009 04:50 AM Dvd Player Or Front Row Help... doylee01 Mac Applications and Mac App Store 0 Dec 30, 2008 04:58 PM Edit .vob files in iMovie?
