Make the Stoic Men's Monolith Softshell Jacket the first jacket you reach for when you head out for a chilly morning trail run or backpacking mission in the fall. Highly breathable Monolith softshell fabric keeps you warm while also allowing excess heat to move away from your body, a point of difficulty for many competing midweight insulating layers. The versatile 3-D ergonomic cut leaves just enough room for your baselayer and a thin midlayer, and it allows for unrestricted range of motion—a nice touch when you're moving in the mountains, on the trail, or around town. Monolith softshell material features high breathability and water-resistance for comfort and protection from the elements and four-way stretch for mobility Monolith softshell's nylon face fabric has a water-resistant laminate and bonded fleece on the inside for warmth Welded seam construction further improves overall breathability and creates a more durable build that lasts through seasons of use and abuse Fleece lining adds plenty of warmth so there's no need for bulky insulation 3-D Ergonomic construction has a fit that's close to the body to help retain warmth but is still roomy enough for layering underneath Two front hand pockets give you a place to stash your keys, snacks, and small essentials Backcountry.com is the exclusive US distributor for Stoic products Terms And Conditions This Usage Agreement (the "Agreement") governs your conduct while using various services on the web site Backcountry.com and its affiliate web sites (collectively, the "Site"). (0) Flag Mike D Hilverda Member since Oct 28, 2013 Groups: Responded on December 4, 2013 This would certainly be a good option for that kind of activity. It will be warm but is also very breathable so their should be any overheating issues on climbs. I would also suggest the Marmot ROM or the Patagonia Adze as other options to consider. Each of those will provide excellent wind blocking. (0) Flag David Thiel Member since May 30, 2012 Responded on December 4, 2013 I do a lot of winter riding... and I'd really recommend you get something with a drop tail to cover your lower back. Not only can that area make you extra cold (thin skin, little fat) but also a drop tail will protect you from the wet spray of the rear wheel. (0) Flag David Thiel Member since May 30, 2012 Responded on December 4, 2013 For winter mountain biking, I really recommend something like this instead: http://www.backcountry.com/louis-garneau-perfector-2-jersey-long-sleeve-mens I wear this over a base layer and sometimes another jersey layer and it is warm but super breathable. (Was out in in last night at 27 F and felt perfect the whole time.) I keep a shell in my camel bak as an extra/windstopping layer should the temperature drop or the weather get nasty... and that combination gives me a great deal of versatility rather than having a single soft-shell layer. (0) Flag Terran Siladi Member since Nov 4, 2011 Responded on October 19, 2013 This jacket will block a good 99% of the wind, as most other soft-shell material out there will. Not as good as a hardshell, but the bonded inner fleece will make it feel warmer in the wind then a hardshell. (0) Flag Have an answer for wd2p88288? Very little care needed. I usually wipe it off with a damp cloth if it gets dirty and its fine. I've never put any extra rain repellent wax on it and it works great. I've rubbed on rock, trees, and dirt and the fabric is still flawless. The glued seams are great and the stretch fabric at the wrists is a nice touch. Nice job Stoic (0) Flag Comment on lanp177213's review » Post a Comment 5 5 Tough Scott Kelso Polk Member since Sep 9, 2013 Groups: Posted on September 25, 2013 Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer Fit: True to size This jacket has proven to be the most comfortable and lightweight softshell's I've ever owned. The fleece lining feels great when just wearing a T-shirt (in both warm and cool weather). Lots of room to layer up if needed, but still form fitted. I crashed on my bike while riding in it and there was no visible damage to the the jacket at all even after sliding 10ft on my back. It's tough. (0) Flag Daughter of Zoltan Member since Nov 30, 2011 Groups: Responded on May 21, 2013 The material of the outershell is a stretch woven with a DWR finish. 85% Nylon and 15% Spandex. Monolith is a 2 layer soft shell, with 4 way stretch, breathable and water resistant. This soft shell can be used for multiple seasons. Keeps out the wind/rain, while keeping in enough air for warmth without overheating. The sleeves are very long, so unless you have simian blood you'll probably have to roll them up a bit. (0) Flag Daughter of Zoltan Member since Nov 30, 2011 Groups: Best Answer Responded on October 18, 2012 This is actually supposed to be labeled as DARK FOREST. It is not the same Forest as the Spring items which you may be referring to. I don't have the Monolith but another style in that color. You can see it is a dark green. (1) Flag The Blue Bomber Member since Jun 3, 2009 Responded on November 8, 2012 Thanks for the pic Zoltan. Since posting this, I have actually seen the jacket and tried it on, and I can confirm it looks nothing like other Stoic pieces with "forest" color. Johnathan Phillips Rogers Member since Mar 18, 2009 Posted on September 28, 2012 Gender: Male Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions This is my first Stoic piece. I have plenty of Arcteryx, MH and Marmot, so I'm accustomed to well-made gear. This Stoic stacks up very, very well against the best of the big brands. The seamless cut and stretchy fabric feel like Arcteryx level gear. Finish is 1st rate and the fleece inside is very warm for such a thin layer. It's impressively weather-proof as well yet I don't really overheat and if I do I cool down quickly. Fit is athletic but not tight. I could add a baselayer if necessary. All together this is a First Class piece, useful for at least 3 seasons, maybe even deep winter depending on how you layer it and what you're doing. Highly recommended.
