The material gives me the right balance of windproofing/breathability. I was looking at the Cloudveil Serendipity Jacket. Does anyone have any other suggestions, also Im interested to see how PowerShield performs in comparison. Cheers Richard W 246 forum posts1 reviews ptc* 10/04/2006 at 11:59 I had a Mammut vertical hoody which was made of a thicker PowerShield. It's a great fabric, weather resitant, sweat management, stretch. But the jacket had a crap hood and the stitching started to go, so it went on ebay. ptc* 6196 forum posts86 photos13 reviews Neil H 10/04/2006 at 14:31 I reckon a Schoeller jacket (having tried it) is too heavy for walking in, and for its weight it doesnt provide enough warmth or protection in winter especially if its a short jacket which most of them tend to be. And i also found its too heavy and bulky to pack for the rest of the year, it may be okay for climbers though. Its not exactly cheap neither compared with other alternatives. Edited: 10/04/2006 at 14:32 Neil H 1507 forum posts34 photos4 reviews druidh 10/04/2006 at 17:32 Depends on the type of Schoeller fabric. There are various weights. I have a MH Velocity jacket which is way lighter than PowerShield. druidh 1318 forum posts1 photos3 reviews Neil H 10/04/2006 at 17:36 Colin - my PowerShield jacket weighs 400 grams, so what does the MH Velocity weigh? Neil H 1507 forum posts34 photos4 reviews captain paranoia 10/04/2006 at 17:48 I'd agree with NM156, having tried a Cloudveil Veiled Peak Schoeller Dynamic jacket, and a number of Schoeller clones (Peter Storm, Lowe Alpine).Schoeller Dynamic is a robust, stretchy fabric that I think is better suited to activities where that robustness is useful; climbing, scrambling, (skiing, possibly). If that's what you're after it for, then great, but if it's for walking, then I think it's OTT.Schoeller Extreme (in its various formats) is similar to Dynamic, except there's a dual weave lining component that adds a fluffier inner face for wicking and a bit of insulation. I find that this makes it bind a bit with undergarments.I find neither to be as wind- or water-resistant as the closer weave microfibres such as Pertex or Airfoil, as the fabric has a more open structure. The fabric used on the defunct Peter Storm soft shell (Mipan Aqua-F) is a closer weave, so performs better. They're all relatively heavy, bulky, not very warm, and are expensive (well, the Peter Storm wasn't...)I think Schoeller Dynamic and Extreme are better suited to trousers, where the stretch and robustness come in useful, and the fabric offers enough protection for the legs, even to the extent of not requiring overtrousers (I find I'm not bothered if my legs are cooler and wetter than my body).PowerShield comes in many weights, but even the lightest is about the same weight as Schoeller, so the weight and bulk problems remain. It's more weatherproof, though. You might have a look at the halfway house (between lightweight Pertex and Schoeller Dynamic/Extreme) fabric of Pertex Stretch Equilibrium (such as Montane's Dynamo jacket). Lighter, less bulky, cheaper, more wind resistant... My Veiled Peak (in S) weighs 428g (no hood). I reckon the Serendipity will weigh more than than due to the design (pockets) and Extreme fabric.Of course, it's possible to get caught up in the weight and bulk issues...It's a nice fabric that drapes beautifully and is quiet. All depends what you want from it... captain paranoia 10436 forum posts206 photos3 reviews Neil H 10/04/2006 at 18:10 Captain - nice summary, also if i had to get rid of my PowerShield jackets then the only thing at the moment that i would replace them with would be Rab Vapour Rise, i certainly wont be going anywhere near Schoeller. Neil H 1507 forum posts34 photos4 reviews Rob . 10/04/2006 at 18:12 I've got a Cloudveil jacket made of Schoeller something and a GoLite Momentum PowerShield Jkt which is defiantly lighter. I like both Jkts and lived in the Cloudveil one before i got my Golite top (which i would not have bought if i was not a rep for golite) and now wear it all the time, I think the Schoeller fabric works better for me as i run hot and it is defiantly more breathable (having no membrane)but on the down side it's not as wind resistant or water resistant. Personally i would recommend the Golite Momentum top if you regard wind resistance as a greater priority than breathability Rob . 256 forum posts captain paranoia 10/04/2006 at 18:36 Yes, I think the lightest weight PowerShield is lighter than Schoeller; I recall seeing the LA Veloce jkt in TKM and remarking at how light it was. Shame they only had the girlies' version...Rob: GoLite covering all bases on the 'Motion Shells' fabric selection, then? (no harm in that; Marmot do the same). Maybe you could prompt them to update their comparison table to current products (Kinetic, Covert & Stealth no longer seem to feature)... captain paranoia 10436 forum posts206 photos3 reviews Major Cynic 11/04/2006 at 12:05 I've been wearing Schoeller fabric trousers for about 6 years now and generally I like them very much. I also have an Arc'yterx jacket made out of PowerShield which I've had for a good few years now. It's not my favorite jacket because its a bit heavy and bulky and not particularly warm. I stick with lined pertex jackets now such as Patagonia's Zephyr and one by Montane. I did have a Marmot dri-clime but I found the under arm messh let in too much wind. The lined Pertex shells offer better wind resistance, lighter weight and less bulk. Whether any manufacturers use any of this stuff is another matter entirely! Steph Bloom 137 forum posts1 reviews captain paranoia 13/04/2006 at 12:53 Steph, where do you get your fabric samples from? I don't know of anywhere in the UK that stocks any PowerShield, let alone different weights of the stuff...Textile Outfitters? The last time I tried to get info from Malden, they offered to send a rep to see me... captain paranoia 10436 forum posts206 photos3 reviews Graeme Cogger 13/04/2006 at 13:04 Try these guys:http://www.shelby.fi/They're actually in Finland, but it's easier than the US and the service is excellent.Tey have 2 types of PowerShield at the moment.
