The sleeves are very thin (I'm 5'9 and 160lbs), its a struggle for me to have a fleece and a base layer underneath. You can also forget about using under-sleeve gloves, this jacket doesn't have cuff straps. I'm thinking about returning this before this next season starts. If you were looking for a jacket that you'd only want a baselayer on, then for the money this is a good buy! Would be fine with just a t-shirt, assuming you have slender arms. I am 6'3" and 160lbs, ordered the XL size, and still the forearms are too tight for my regular fleece jacket underneath. This limits my ability to use the jacket in the winter, as by itself it is not very warm. Good overall shoulder mobility. Chest is slightly large for my frame, which was expected due to my slight build. Construction quality is good, as is the fabric. Biggest complaint is the poor design on the arms, and the overly skinny cuffs, even for someone with pencil wrists. The puffy jacket gets wet and a rain jacket is not warm enough. I found this jacket and it looked to meet all those requirements. I initially ordered the Vintage\Excalibur and returned it for the Shale... was too "plum" colored for me. The jacket is super lightweight, a fantastic color with great turquoise zips. Hood is huge and comfy, big side pockets and a high chin zip. Cool detail in the welded seams. As the other reviewer mentions, the internal material is cozy, but a little grabby on whatever layer you have on under. Perfect over a tshirt though. Honestly, I probably wouldn't ski in this. For skiing, I far prefer a layer and shell where this is a single unit. But it would totally work, certainly technical enough. Best of all though, this jacket is an excellent value. It's currently pretty late in the season, so I'm sure I got a late-season price... but even during the winter it was very reasonably priced. I don't like how Stoic changed the front pocket to how it looks now, but the jacket itself is awesome! the microfleece on the inside of the arms is slightly annoying when putting the jacket on over a baselayer because it grabs the base layer sleeves more than other jackets and pulls them up. It's kept me dry in quick showers, but I haven't really put the waterproofing through hard core testing. Nice big zippered pockets, and as a bonus for layering the Stoic Down Anorak just barely squeezes down small enough to to shove into the pocket-- I've taken advantage of this at ski resorts where I throw on the puffy to ride up the lift, then stick it in the pocket on the way down. At 5'10 and 150 lbs the medium is a nice athletic fit with room for a layer underneath, but no excess material. At first I thought the sleeves were a little long, but have gotten used to it and appreciated the fact that they won't ride up and expose your wrists to the elements when wearing ski gloves. NJ Phil Member since Jan 18, 2012 Posted on January 18, 2012 Picked up this jacket last month, and finally got a chance to test it this past weekend. I'm impressed! First off, I'm a big fan of the Rime Pullover by Backcountry. I have 2 of them, and was looking to purchase another. I like the stretchy Polartec Power Shield fabric for my main layer in the both the Spring & Fall. I primarily use them for rock climbing, where it is warm and INDESTRUCTIBLE! Unfortunately, the Rime pullover is no longer available. So, I was looking for a beefier replacement to serve as main layer for ice climbing in the winter. I wanted the same stretchy and indestructible, Polartec Power Shield fabric, and this Welder Lo softshell by Stoic fit the requirements. I'm 5'-11", 180lbs and the Large fits perfectly. It has an athletic cut and around the torso, but is wonderfully long in the arms and torso length. I was able to place two thin layers underneath it (a poly base & R2 insulation layer), and still have plenty of room. The extra length in the torso allows me to tuck well under the waist belt of my climbing harness, where it stayed there all day. I just came back from 3 days of Northeast ice climbing in the 0-10 degree range, and I was plenty warm enough while moving. The pockets, zipper pulls, and hood were all easy to use while gloved. I was somewhat disturbed to put the jacket on for the first time. It fit very snug. I'm 6' tall 190 pounds the large is tight across the shoulders and chest. The sleeve openings are also tight and nonadjustable. The torso length seems fine. I've worn the piece in temperature from 50-20 degrees F. It is not good at the colder end of that spectrum unless you are active then it is decent. The only draw back is it doesn't breath well enough if too active, The jacket does have good wind resistance and decent water resistance. I have yet to wear it as an insulating layer.This may be the best use for it. I had a guy running up to me just to ask where I got the jacket from. I am 5'7", 140lbs, and the medium fit me well if I wear only a base layer underneath it. The armpit is a little tight, so if you are a bodybuilder type, it's not going to fit. The sleeve's wrist opening is tight, not adjustable. I definitely prefer Velcro adjustment. The jacket is constructed solely with Polartec PowerShield, which is abrasion resistant, and blocks the wind well, but doesn't insulate due to the thinness of the material. I can feel the cold seeping in. None the less, I work up a sweat in 45F temperature just by walking fast, and the fabric around my neck is a little damp, which is why I had to return the jacket. It just doesn't breath well enough for me. I would love to buy a jacket made entirely with PowerShield O2, which breath well enough for me. I tried the O2 in Marmot Pro Tour jacket,loved it, but the Pro Tour's back and side are made of their M2 softshell, which pilled during the short time I used it. Keep in mind that although this jacket is weather resistant, it is neither wind nor water proof. For this reason in heavy winds a hard shell will be necessary to cut out windchill, and during extended rains a hard shell will be necessary to stay dry. However Polartec, and Stoic, make excellent weather resistant textiles / apparel. For this reason when using it in more casual activities you should be fine. Add a photo(Optional) Terms & Conditions From Your Computer From Another Website Post Answer 5 5 Versatility to the Extreme Terran Siladi Member since Nov 4, 2011 Posted on November 14, 2011 Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer Fit: True to size First lets start with the fact that this jacket is awesome. technically I have last years version, but they are pretty similar as far as I can tell, so here goes it. This jacket fits like a dream (I'm 6'1" and about 170, got a medium) so a thin athletic cut is exactly what I wanted. The jacket feels like it's tailored. It's super simple, but in a good way. Every feature that i want is right there, but there are no frills where they aren't needed. Perfect. I've read in the past that some people had issue with the cuffs (they're not adjustable) but I love them. Velcro cuffs always bug me... I never seem to be able to get them to a tightness that feels right and they always seem to be snagging on things, but with this jacket the cuffs just 'fit' and I don't have to worry about them. The material is super soft, both inside and out, and I wear this to class on many days with just a t-shirt on underneath (note, if you only have a short sleeve on under this you might feel the welded seams against your skin as somewhat "sharp" edges", I was a little surprised by this the first time, but it doesn't bother me now and it's only occasional, usually when putting the jacket on). I stay comfortable down to around 6 or 7ºC with just the tshirt and this. There is also enough room underneath for layering my MH monkeyman, this combination seems like perfect winter setup, and I expect that it's all I'll need this season. Also did I mention that this things breaths like a champ? Well it does, never had any issues with condensation while wearing this, even when standing around inside...sometimes I don't even take it off when I'm in class. I got mine on sac for an insanely good deal, so full price for the jacket might be a little much (then again I'm a poor college student)... but if I lost this one tomorrow I think I'd throw down the cash for a new one. It breathes really well, but I found if it was snowing and in the upper 20's to low 30's I would overheat while touring. I burn really hot though, so others might not have this issue. I have the M from back then and it's pretty damn tight and hard to fit anything warm underneath (thick fleece, Stoic luft synthetic jacket), whereas M from most other brands fits me just fine (180cm, a little under 80 kg, 40" chest).
