What gets you guys more traffic, the daily blog type posts on the front page or the forums? Have you been approached by any TV execs or even by MLG and how are those types of business decisions viewed/handled? CEO and UFGT8 were amazing. Even the other nights SBO 3v3 was mindblowing. How do you top the year that the FGC community has been having? Lastly, tell me about... the FUTURE! How long until competitive gaming outpaces traditional sports and we have little kids with Mike Ross or Noah posters hanging on their walls? permalinksave[+]inkblotSRK[S] 15 points16 points17 points 1 year ago (10 children)[–]inkblotSRK[S] 15 points16 points17 points 1 year agosorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on Forums but that's not a worthwhile comparison. The front page is one page. The forums are literally tens of thousands. Nope! TV is dead though. They just don't know it yet. We believe that if something is in the game, let it rock unless it makes the game literally unplayable. To me items are what make Smash unique and fun over other kinds of fighters. The Smash guys see it differently, and would rather distill the game down the most fair, balanced version they can. Rather than fight over who's right and who's wrong, we just decided to leave them alone and go our separate ways. permalinksaveparent[+]1338h4x 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (1 child)[–]1338h4x 4 points5 points6 points 1 year agosorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted onCouldn't the same reasoning apply to gems in SFxT? They're in the game, they don't make it unplayable. [insert obvious jokes about the game already being unplayable either way] I think it's best to just go with what the community wants when it comes to rulesets - plenty of players do consider items to be unplayable, or at least a completely different game that isn't what they want to play. permalinksaveparent[+]-iShA 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (0 children)[–]-iShA 3 points4 points5 points 1 year agosorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted onI think if there was a way to setup gems quickly they would be allowed. It's like if in street fighter if certain characters were give random buffs through out a match. Yeah, sure the game can be played, but the competitiveness is gone. I think it's complete horse shit and fake excuse that the founders of Evo think that items should be in the game. If you want items in Smash Bros. to be at Evo, then start throwing other random shit in Street Fighter, because the game will be playable - just not at a competitive level. I think most of the Evo founders while smart dudes have their heads up their asses sometimes when it comes to games that they haven't actually sat down and become good at. permalinksaveparent[+]awkwardcthulhu -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago (1 child)[–]awkwardcthulhu -1 points0 points1 point 1 year agosorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted onThe competitiveness isn't gone, it's just different. Obviously you can't answer 100% because you don't know my own or the tournaments situation but am curious on if you think it's a worthwhile addition to a smaller tournament? We currently have 6 games for a two day event, with about 30-50 people expected to attend. Although as a smash player, I can assure you that items are not fair. If a bob-omb spawns right next to you, and the other player is at 25% damage or more they're screwed. Besides that items like the fan rack up damage very easily and quickly and all you're doing is pressing A. There's no skill there. If the luck evens out over time, tournaments don't show who was the best, they show who was the luckiest. I actually believe the same about poker. People can be dealt amazing hands all the time, and end up just getting lucky the whole way. As long as you know how to play the game, you can win. That's not true with games like marvel and street fighter. Those games people have to get very technical, they practice combos, you can't do that in smash, and items just remove the technical component. It devolves into a game of get the pokeballs or get the hammer. It takes the fun out of the game, and it takes the fun out of watching it. There would be no reason to choose any other character other than fox or falco. These two characters possess enough speed and shut down ability that you would be stupid not to pick these heroes in an item battle. Reflector, shine combos, speed, the game would be too easy. Also, at the level the level that smash (melee) has reached today, one star on any competitive smasher would lead to a free stock. Yes, items are fun, and they do make for a good time but on a competitive level it would be way too unbalanced. For a few examples, edge guards would be ridiculously easy using any item to throw. Secondly, there wouldnt be a battle over a majority of the items because the delay of obtaining the item or the usefulness of the item would not be worth sacrificing the normal a attack. Thirdly, the invis item and metal box would just be gg. Especially since a game's community will know the game a lot more than everyone else. Also, items actually reduces the amount of options and skill in the game. Like, most items are used exactly the same by every character. We believe that if something is in the game, let it rock unless it makes the game literally unplayable." By that same logic you could say that being able to turn items on and off is in the game. "To me items are what make Smash unique and fun over other kinds of fighters." There are plenty of things that make smash unique. In fact, items might be the least unique thing about it. Items are in other games like in the powerstone series. Things that make smash unique: How to KO Directional Influence Stages and Stage Control is emphasized more in smash than any other fighting game, like 50x more than in soul caliber. The game's physics and mechanics "side scrolling" Combo system Smash's Shielding system Smash's many Advanced Techniques not found in any other fighting series. A couple of the things you mention have already been embraced by the FGC. It would be nice if the conversation could shift away from "eSport bad!" to "here are the things we are not going to lose" which for me personally would be a couple of things. Maintain a large and growing player base. Lots of eSports explicitly setup a pro vs. fan dynamic. I think it's better for the game's long term health and better for the community to have as many people playing as possible. Keep it more like poker, less like football (or Starcraft). Keep some perspective. Competitive gaming is a fantastic hobby. For 99.9% of gamers though, it's a terrible career choice. I think eSports way oversells the "go-pro" aspect to a lot of impressionable young kids. Here's the short version. Sunnyvale Goldland introduced me to hardcore competitive Street Fighter and tournaments. After learning the ropes there, I decided to hold my own tournament (B3) to settle some internet grudges. A few years later, Peter Kang approached me and by brother about doing another tournament (B4) as the subject for a documentary, Bang the Machine. After B4, we figured we were pretty good at this sort of thing, so we started doing it every year along with MrWizard. B5, our next tournament, was our last event held in arcades. At that point we were just too big to fit in an arcade. We moved the party to the UCLA convention hall and rebranded it to Evo. Evo 2002 was still held on arcade machines. We had to rent every single machine in the city to run the event, and swore we'd never do it that way again. In 2003 we made the super controversial decision to switch to consoles. Many accused us of driving the last nail into the coffin of fighting games. I think it worked out pretty well. permalinksaveparent[+]pattheflip 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)[–]pattheflip 1 point2 points3 points 1 year agosorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted onWasn't 2003 still on cabs? Capcom (accidentally?) created a nearly perfect spectator game in SF4. I played at UFGT and did somewhat well: 3rd in KOF Character Auction, 13th in SoulCalibur V, and 4th in my Skullgirls pool. However, there is simply no way I can devote the amount of time that it takes to play at the same level as some of the players who are able to practice 40 hours a week. I have a wife and a career that take precedence, but I still wish to be able to compete in tournaments. In other games and sports, such as tennis, car racing, boxing, and golf, pro/am splits are not too uncommon. permalinksave[+]inkblotSRK[S] 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago (1 child)[–]inkblotSRK[S] 11 points12 points13 points 1 year agosorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted onI don't think so. I'll go back to my old standby and say this is yet another case where fighters are like poker. An amateur poker player can maybe consistently win his weekly game, but isn't going to win the WSOP. The challenge for us as a community is to continue to grow the tiers of events for players. We need more local leagues like WNF, and a much bigger focus on regional events instead of calling everything a major. I actually think it's counter-productive to have the top 10 players in the US flying around the country every week. It stunts the development of local talent. permalinksaveparent[+]AuhsojSivart -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 year ago (0 children)[–]AuhsojSivart -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 year agosorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted onI definitely agree. I wonder if you think that some of these regional, mid-level scale tourneys should ban pro players from entering. Or, should there be two tiers of competition at a tournament? Maybe make the pro players play each other in a more high-stakes environment while also letting people like me play with a decent chance to win in a lower stakes tourney. Would something like this ruin the spirit of the FGC or discourage competition? permalinksaveparent[+]ArmorMog[US]GFWL: mogiv 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)[–]ArmorMog[US]GFWL: mogiv 0 points1 point2 points 1 year agosorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted onWhy did you guys drop Tekken 6, knowing that TTT2 is right around the corner and will (hopefully) attract a lot of attention?
