Photo by Forest Woodward Photography View on Facebook Via YouTube 1/27/2014 8:08:47 AM www.outdoorresearch.com www.ducktapethenbeer.com www.5pointfilm.org In summer 2011, Outdoor Research athlete Kyle Dempster took off on his bike across Kyrgyzstan with a couple mostly-accurate maps, a trailer full of climbing gear, and a vocabulary of 10 Kyrgyz words. He spent two months pedaling and pushing the bike more than 1200 km on roads of variable states of neglect, wading through wild rivers, dealing with corrupt military checkpoint staff, and soloing a handful of unclimbed alpine rock and mixed routes. He recorded the journey, his camera his only partner, friend, and sometimes the only receiving end of his conversations for days at a time. In 2013, Kyle's self-shot footage of his journey in Kyrgyzstan made it to the desk of filmmakers Fitz Cahall and Austin Siadak, who were asked to look at the footage and see if there might be enough to chop together a 4-minute climbing film. They saw a lot more potential in it, and turned it into the 25-minute "The Road From Karakol," which debuted at the 5Point Film Festival and took home the Best In Fest award. The film premieres online today, and we hope it will inspire you to start dreaming up your next adventure. But for a trio of dreamers and gypsies, home is a space that doesn't stand still. Home follows the snow. Storm by storm, chasing memories made one powder turn at a time, home is a 112-square foot Victorian cabin on wheels. Home is the Outdoor Research Tiny House. Two winters ago my partner Zack Giffin, our buddy Neil Provo and I joined the Tiny House movement. We built a miniature cabin on a trailer in Colorado, hitched it to a funky old diesel truck, and set out to chase winter. Two full seasons have passed living in our rolling house. We've been everywhere from Silverton to Roger's Pass, tapping into local scenes and killer lines. We have a blossoming bouquet of new ski friends, and we've even started a tiny house band - one melodeon following two guitarists. Last December we were snowed in at Mt. Baker, Washington, and had to gift a friendly snowplow driver beer in exchange for spending his afternoon digging "Tiny" out. We've had the truck catch on fire, skied from the Whitewater parking lot in the moonlight at 3 a.m., and hosted cozy parties for over 20 new friends in a space hardly big enough for three. Livin' tiny has been an exercise in downsizing everything tangible in our lives in order to magnify the experiences. We'll never forget the way the mountains looked as we stared out the teensy windows every morning, how piles of gear avalanched from every nook and cranny of the house, how much patience was needed to stoke the wood-burning stove after charging non-stop on a day that started under the moonlight and ended the same way. In these two years on the road with Tiny, we've found home everywhere we've been. Each day we look out our petite front door, a new snow-covered mountain in our new backyard, and we think, "Today, home is here. This must be the place." Here's wishing you your own season of adventures in the mountains we all call home. Via a tiny house, a friend's cabin, a tent or even your climbing skins, incredible experiences are waiting out there, ready to come to life, ready to inspire you for the rest of your years. Look for us. We'll see you out there. Happy Holidays, and Happy Winter from the Tiny House Crew! View on YouTube Via Facebook 1/25/2014 1:00:01 PM OR Ambassador of the Week: Sarah Hueniken. View on Facebook Via YouTube 1/20/2014 11:25:26 AM By Outdoor Research Ski Ambassador Molly Baker Skiing for me... it's never been easy. I was never on the race team. I didn't ski moguls. But when I went to college, I went to college in a large city. And I wanted to get back into the mountains, so I joined the ski team. At this time in my life, I was just looking for something, looking for direction. And it gave me some kind of purpose, because it was difficult. It wasn't easy, and I wasn't a good skier. But I had such a drive to challenge myself, and to see what was possible in myself. School didn't do that for me, because it felt attainable. But skiing gave me this challenge that'd I'd never experienced before. And now I've been living on the road for over two years, and it's been interesting to feel that shift towards a big wide open space as home. Discovering that space, I think that feels like home more than anywhere now. Whether it's wind on your face, or feeling sun burnt, or feeling really happy in a powder turn...people want to feel something that's real. And I related to that, and I see that in all the skiers that I know. Every day that you go out on your skis, you're trying to be better; You're trying to make yourself a better skier, but you're trying to make yourself a better person, just because of the kind of challenge that skiing gives you. And that's the whole idea of becoming "a skier", you know, "a ski bum." You ski every day, and you devote your life to skiing because it gives you some kind of purpose. The action of skiing and the belief in skiing are equally important to me. The belief in skiing as something that allows people to achieve being the best person that they're going to be, and what that does to them mentally is just as important as physically what you can do on your skis. And as your skiing evolves, it's really important to always be aware of what you're getting from this thing, skiing, that you are putting your energy and love into. She was the youngest woman to ever climb 5.14, climbing To Bolt or Not to Be (5.14a, 8b+) at Oregon's Smith Rock in 1998. She went on to co-establish the first free ascent of Lurking Fear (5.10 A3) on Yosemite's El Capitan in 2000, establish the first free ascent of Smith Rock's The Optimist (5.14b) in 2005, and redpoint Yosemite's Meltdown (proposed 5.14c) in 2008. At a proposed grade of 5.14c, Meltdown is considered the hardest climb in Yosemite and the hardest trad pitch in the United States. Beth's ascent of Meltdown was the most difficult ascent of any route by an American woman, and it remains the hardest trad route ascent established by a woman anywhere. In June of 2009, Beth tore the labrum in her right shoulder while bouldering in Yosemite and subsequently reinjured the shoulder twice. For this elite climber, it was the most serious in a series of untimely and debilitating injuries including a broken ankle and a torn collateral ligament in both index fingers. In the end, Beth decided her best bet for a full recovery was surgery to repair the tear. Forced to dial back the intensity and difficulty of her climbing as she heals, Beth says the time recovering from her injuries and subsequent surgery has allowed her to reconnect with the basic joys of rock climbing that first drew her to the sport. Says Beth, "Climbing outside with friends in some of the most beautiful places I can image—This is all I need." "But I have to admit," she continues, "I definitely think about some of my unfinished projects." At Outdoor Research, where Beth is now working with our design team to produce world-class rock climbing apparel and gear, we're all wishing her a quick return to the elite level she pioneered. And if we know Beth like we think we do, we're sure she'll get there soon. Watch "Climbing Back" to see Beth tackling her long road to recovery.
