Using their innate ability to transform between robot and vehicle forms, the Autobots will need to navigate maze-like platforms in order to find and collect all four pieces of the Autobot Energon Cube, before the Decepticons steal them. In the way are nine of the most feared Decepticon warriors, each of which can be cloned in order to continue the onslaught. Starscream, Soundwave, Buzzsaw, Lazerbeak and their leader, Megatron are just some of the robots you'll encounter. Controlling one Autobot at a time, players must seek out the energy pieces and then return them to the Autobot Centre. However, take too long to assemble the entire cube and the Decepticons will steal the pieces from you. Each robot has different PowerShield, strength and firepower attributes, all of which can be replenished by hiding beneath Defensa-Pods; small dome-like structures littered about the landscape, and the only safe place to hide from the Decepticons. Each unit has the ability to fly, though it can be a perilous venture. Landing on, or touching anything other than a flat surface will bring about instant death, as will mistakenly selecting another unit before securing the current one under a Defensa-Pod. Thankfully, the Defensa-Pods provide brief respite from the constant barrage of kamikaze enemy units who would no sooner kill themselves by colliding with your character than they would shoot you. Each enemy re-spawns immediately after death, returning to once again gnaw away at your shield bar. Sadly, the units' varied abilities can become more of a hindrance than should otherwise be. Jazz for example, is one of the fastest moving characters in the game, and in vehicle mode becomes nigh uncontrollable due to his blinding speed. As a result, falling to your death off a platform becomes an all too common occurrence. The repetitive level design helps little, and gamers may tire of the seemingly endless collection of pipes and platforms. Not only is finding and then returning the pieces of Energon hard enough, but if it takes too long to retrieve them, the enemy units will steal the ones you've already collected. The slanted difficulty coupled with some frustrating gameplay issues restrict play sessions to short periods, unless you can tolerate a handful of very annoying quirks. For all its flaws however, Transformers still manages to entertain, if only for a little while. Points are awarded for the destruction of Decepticons and for each level completed, so only the truly masochistic will garner significant playtime by attempting to best their own high scores. ~ Gavin Frankle, All Game Guide Production Credits Music: Fred Gray ~ Michael L. It was written by Denton Designs and released by Ocean Software for the Sinclair Spectrum and Commodore 64 home computers in 1986 Contents 1 Gameplay 2 Reception 3 References 4 External links Gameplay In the game, the Autobots are searching for four parts of an energon cube which have been scattered around a city, which consists of a number of platforms and ladders. The Decepticons are also seeking the energon cube, and will destroy the Autobots in order to retrieve it. The player controls five Autobots: Optimus Prime, Hound, Jazz, Mirage and Bumblebee, one at a time. When not in use, the Autobots hide in Defense Pods; while inside these pods they cannot be harmed, and will slowly recharge their energy. The Decepticons are represented by Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream, Buzzsaw, Skywarp, Laserbeak, Ravage, Frenzy and Rumble. The Decepticons can regenerate and do not transform. Each Autobot has three attributes (Shields, Power and Weapons) with each character having them in different distributions (Optimus Prime has a high Power rating, average Shields and low Weapons, while Mirage has a high Weapons rating but lower Power and Shields). Each character can transform between their vehicle and robot forms by facing forward and pressing the fire button. Unlike the cartoon, all the Autobots can fly while in robot form, although they travel faster by using their vehicle modes. Driving off the end of platforms or into stationary objects will cause the character to die.[1] Reception  Reception Review scores Publication Score CRASH 60% [2] Your Sinclair 6/10[3] Sinclair User 4/5[1] The game's received mixed reviews - Sinclair User gave the game 4 stars out of five,[1] while Your Sinclair gave it 6/10[3] and Crash gave it 60%.[2] Max Phillips from Your Sinclair said the game was "slick but nothing new, the keyboard controls are awful and the cassette inlay is diabolical"[3] while John Gilbert of Sinclair User said "Transformers is a game where a high score is all-important, and I am sure that once you have found the energy cube you will still enjoy a scrap with the Decepticons".[1] When asked, in an interview with Julian Rignall of Crash, which of their games they were least pleased with, Ally Noble, one of the developers of The Transformers admitted that it was "definitely Transformers... it's really a personal thing, we all like different products, but I think Transformers was an embarrassment".[4] References ^ a b c d "Transformers Review", Sinclair User, March 1986  ^ a b "Transformers Review", CRASH, April 1986  ^ a b c "Transformers Review", Your Sinclair, March 1986  ^ "Art for Art's Sake...
