I bought this sucker in fall 2010 for SnowKiting and have a full season on it now. I wanted a windproof, breathable shell/jacket that would be highly flexible. The jacket has exceeded my expectations. Amazingly windproof given it's flex and breathability. As for the lack of 'insulation', well, you don't need much when the wind is not whipping through your core stripping your heat. If it matters, I wear a merino base layer and a then a merino midweight pullover or vest and this setup works well in temps from 5-20 deg F with winds in the 15-30 range, exertion ranging from full-on to standstill. I have rarely used the zip vents. If I recall correctly it has mainly been when the humidity is fairly high, as in heavy wet snowfall, and even then I just barely crack them on my hikes to/fro location. As for the hood, I am very sensitive with regard to my peripheral vision and have not had success with hoods in the past. Most just obstruct my vision. This hood fits well, gives excellent peripheral, and stretches/moves without a hitch. General comfort, well, when I hit the coffee shop I don't even notice it is on until someone asks me if I am gonna take off my jacket and stick around, and even then I don't feel the need to take it off to get 'more comfortable'. Seems durable, has seen it's share of body abusing crashes and missed landings, skidding across rough snow / ice and not a scratch to be found. I must admit, it has held up better than I'd originally expected. It is a truly impressive jacket. I am going to use it this year for FatBiking on fairly windy days as well. The wrist gaiters are awesome, but they are made of some stretchy type of thin material I was scared I would tear (didn't happen). There is a goggle wipe in the right hand pocket that isn't listed and it's removable. The chest vents work very well and the overall breathability of the jacket is fantastic as well as its waterproofness. I took this jacket out snowshoeing and it worked like a charm keeping snow out and the necessary warmth in (chest vents needed though). The power shield pro has amazing stretch and good durability that was tested while trail blazing in the snow. Powder skirt worked like it should. However, the fit is not amazing. I was aware that the fit is an athletic cut, but I wasn't concerned because I'm athletic. What I was NOT counting on was the fact that this medium jacket seems like it is made for people who are at least 6'+. Standing at 5'9", the arm length and overall length on this jacket was way too long and it looked like I was wearing a large. The chest fit like what I would expect from an athletic cut and was great for my size (151 lbs, 40in chest). It allowed for a baselayer, a mid layer, and even a form fitting fleece on top of that if needed (a bit tight with all 3, but it stretched to accommodate!) In the end, I highly recommend this jacket if you are around 6ft or taller because if you aren't you will prob look like a child with your dad's jacket on OR if you don't care about the strange, skinny monkey fit and want an amazing jacket. BC, thank you for an amazing return policy!! I'm 6'6'' 190lbs, and ordered the XL. The sleeves are long enough for my freakish long arms, yet the jacket is slim enough that it fits well and does not look like I have a dress on. Its incredibly light, and extremely warm, if you pair this with a nice base layer, it will be the only jacket you would ever need/use. (0) Flag Comment on and4383373's review » Post a Comment 5 5 Excellent jacket - period! lsk4175006 Member since Dec 15, 2010 Posted on December 15, 2010 Let's review the gear for what it's supposed to be and not for what you want it to be. I bought this jacket for down hill skiing, X-country touring in high alpine environment (not training in track), biking, hiking in cold weather and hopefully Randonee. I have had the jacket for a week and it has so far met my expectations and more. It matches the description on this page very well. The fleece like backing adds some warmth but not too much which was very important. The jacket is meant for activity and if you need a super warm jacket get something else. Know how you handle cold. I have used it for my bike commute 7.5 miles to work in Wisconsin in temps down to -20C/-4F. Because I can easily layer, which was another important feature for me, I tend to stuff too much underneath. One long sleeve Craft base with an Arc'teryx half zip base and a Arc'teryx or Craft mid layer (L2) has been too warm. I'm learning. I still had room for more so layering is not a problem. I'm 6'1", 175 lbs, 32-33" waist, 35" sleeve from neck, 40" chest (I think). Size L, color Caviar. The sleeves are long - just right - with an ingenious closing solution and cuffs which should make it easy to adjust the length. I have managed to fit regular gloves under and my Hestra Heli mitt (another excellent Scandinavian product) over the sleeve - not at the same time if you wonder. No air leaks. The back is long and nice. The material is stretchy and soft enough to replace your pajamas but still appears to be very strong. I took a spill on nasty ice with sharp ridges but can't find any scratches or marks on it. I can't vouch for durability of course. It seems to breath and it manages to shield from the wind. Pockets are good. The hood seems to be adjustable enough to handle anything between helmet and beanie. Not tested. The collar/hood solution protects you just fine. You can easily fold the front down if you want to feel the wind in your face. On top of everything else it appears to be well made. It looks great and totally different from the rest of the crowd if that's a selling point for you. What else can you ask for? (2) Flag Comment on lsk4175006's review » Post a Comment 2 5 Do not recommend for commuters Member since Dec 9, 2010 Posted on December 9, 2010 This is not a commuter coat for cold weather as the United Hemispheres magazine suggests. It is also not cut full-bodied. So, if you are even slightly 'round' in the middle, forget it. This is cut for very slim people. The pile lining (more like fuzz) does not qualify as insulation. Hard to imagine how you could layer other warm clothes underneath since the cut is so trim! It is well made, however. (0) Flag kwi2444928 Member since Mar 18, 2009 Responded on December 9, 2010 This jacket doesn't deserve a two star rating based on the fact that you didn't read under Fit in the top right hand corner the word Athletic or the No where the word Insulation is. There's also a size chart that could also aid in fit. (5) Flag rev Member since Jul 9, 2010 Responded on December 29, 2010 Are you kidding me? I didn't realize one could be so rich, yet monumentally dumb. Who buys a $400 uninsulated technical shell and expects to use it for commuting, of all things? What a joke. Stick to North Face and Arc'teryx if your main concern is _looking_ like a dashing adventurer without ever touching the trail. They both make some nice luxury lifestyle yuppie stuff in addition to whatever is left of their technical line. Uncle Thor Member since Nov 11, 2010 Posted on November 11, 2010 No XXL offered? No XXXL at all? I'm 6'4" with a 48 inch chest, fairly large shoulders, arms. Sleeve, body length isn't usually a problem, but I think I'd need at least 2XL. Nobody else has a coat made with this PowerShield with fleece interior backing? Something with a roomier cut, perhaps? (0) Flag TJP Member since Dec 30, 2009 Responded on November 11, 2010 Uncle Thor, I had a nice answer all typed up with lots of suggestions and realized this coat is made with PowerShield *PRO*. Much fewer options for that. Polartec lists them here: http://www.polartec.com/#/shelter/polartec-power-shield-pro/ Of the 3 choices the TNF option is the only one that will fit your burly chest. I hope this helps a little. (0) Flag Have an answer for Uncle Thor? Add a photo(Optional) From Your Computer From Another Website Post Answer Now I'm confused. The description says... Rocky Mountain Goat Member since Mar 18, 2009 Posted on October 14, 2010 Now I'm confused. The description says that this jacket is NOT insulated, but people have mentioned that this has the high-loft fleece backing which is considerable amount of insulation. Can someone confirm? (0) Flag DeskDriver Member since Feb 1, 2011 Responded on October 14, 2010 Rocky Mountain Goat et all, Thanks for your questions regarding the Norrona Narvik PowerShield Pro Jacket. If you have read anything about this new material from Polartec, you will know that you get weather protection of a hardshell, Windstopperesque CFM properties to block wind, and the best of both worlds, air permeability. Norrona is only one of three manufacturers globally to be using this material. The Narvik does not feature a high loft fleece backer. If you are looking for PowerShield Pro with a high loft fleece interior we have a piece coming in from Eider that is killer for this season. The Norrona piece is equally great, just not insulated. I have been testing this material for about 5 months and am sold on the functionality, and I am not a softshell person. I hope this is helpful. (1) Flag Rocky Mountain Goat Member since Mar 18, 2009 Responded on October 14, 2010 DeskDriver - Do you know when the other PowerShield Pro stuff will be available? (0) Flag nex2514820 Member since Mar 18, 2009 Best Answer Responded on October 17, 2010 Insulated means the jacket shell is hollow and filled with insulation. This material has a backing that has loft, it acts as insulation, but this does not make the jacket 'insulated'. Consider it the difference between the insulation between the walls of your house vs mounting carpet to the inside of your windows. (1) Flag DeskDriver Member since Feb 1, 2011 Responded on October 17, 2010 Rocky Mountain Goat, Thanks for your question. The Eider Power Pro softshell, that has the high loft interior, should be available on the site in the next week or so. I hope this is again helpful for you. (0) Flag Rocky Mountain Goat Member since Mar 18, 2009 Responded on October 21, 2010 Nex251480 - Let me be clear on what I'm asking. I also call highloft/midloft fleece interior insulation...its another form of insulation. See the Arc'teryx Hercules or Firee jacket. From what Deskdfriver has said this jacket lacks either a fiber fill or hi/medium loft fleece insulation. (0) Flag Have an answer for Rocky Mountain Goat?
