Bredelman Member since Dec 12, 2012 Posted on January 27, 2014 Familiarity: I've used it several times Great as a light jacket or as a layer. Very versatile. Breathes well, blocks wind well, sheds light precipitation well. You can have this jacket meet almost anything you could want a softshell to do. I say it runs a little big but only in length. I'm 5'8" and 155 lbs and wear a medium and it seems a little long in the sleeves and torso (maybe an inch or two). If anything, it could be a positive for climbing. I got the highlighter green with forest green accent and was mistaken for a Seahawks fan.... awkward... :D (0) Flag Comment on Bredelman's review » Post a Comment Peakbaggin' Texas state highpoint Justin Hebert Member since Dec 28, 2011 Posted on January 9, 2014 (1) Flag Comment on Justin Hebert's image » Post a Comment 5 5 Outstanding. Impressed with how it breathes under aerobic activity. Great wind block - have ran in 20s with wind and only a wool tech t-shirt. Performed well in light rain. Climbing with only a wool long sleeve. Then throw on an outer insulated jacket for the down. Initial impression is it will be durable with pack wear. Just the right amount of pockets. Plus - have received compliments on the cobalt blue. My new favorite go to jacket. But I also like winter camping so i wanted it to work in conjunction with my other layers to keep me warm once I settle down in camp. I am 5'10" 145lbs and I got a small and it is really perfect. I can wear it over a base layer and be warm in most cases, or I have also worn an extra mid layer beneath it on really cold days. i took it winter camping in the adirondacks over Thanksgiving weekend with snow and temps around 0F, and I was very happy with how it performed shedding light snow and working with my other layers when it got cold at night. Back in the city, it has a slim fit and looks nice. (1) Flag Comment on Nick Chmura's review » Post a Comment 5 5 Perfect Fit! Matt Member since May 19, 2011 Posted on December 4, 2013 Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions Fit: True to size I just received the jacket so I haven't had a chance to test its performance, but the fit is perfect. It's always a gamble buying without trying but other Marmot items have fit me well so I assumed this would too. I'm 5"10 165 lbs. and the Medium fits me great. The sleeves have some extra length but that's just part of the ROM. When raising your arms over your head, your wrists are still protected. Marmots website says this jacket is "athletic fit" but there's plenty of room for a long sleeve base layer or even something a bit heavier, without being too tight or too lose. Planning on hitting the northern provinces of India first and will need a jacket (not doing anything super hardcore, light treking at the most). Will this be too warm once I make my way farther south and will it pack down small? Also, Im 6'2" 170..seems like the medium should do the trick right? Thanks! -Alex (0) Flag James Howard Member since Aug 15, 2011 Best Answer Responded on November 25, 2013 Honestly, I think this jacket may be a solid choice, simply because Asia is recognized as being one of those warmer, more humid climates on Mother Earth, and while others have said it works well retaining heat as long as you're active (regardless of intensity), they have concomitantly stated that it didn't cause you to clam up (at least not to the point of complaint). I hope someone will be able to answer the question pertaining to packed-down size, as I don't own the jacket, so I couldn't tell you what happens when you attempt to do that, but my guess is that it would in fact get small enough that you wouldn't be dealing with some uncontrollable ball of obtrusive fabric. Regarding size, there are a couple others (e.g. Samuel Loy - 6'1", 190lbs; rob5831619 - 6'4" ,185 lbs ) who said the large "fit great", but then you have "soleildufo107005" and "zak harris" who said that the jacket ran large on them and their respective measurements were close to yours, so I would hesitate to assert one size over the other without knowing more measurements pertaining to your physical dimensions. I'll list them. 1) Gore Windstopper. I may catch some flack for this, but in my opinion, it's better than Polartec PowerShield. It blocks the wind almost as well, but for me, it breathes so much better. I'm comparing this to a Marmot Kingpin, which I love as well, but for day to day comfort, I'd pick the ROM. Don't get me wrong, the Kingpin is great, and definitely a more waterproof jacket, but I sweat a lot more in it. There are tradeoffs, and for the price, I think the ROM is a better option. 2) The fit is great on this. Not too tight, not baggy. I'm 5'10", shorter torso, 165lbs, and the small fits well, fairly trim, not much room for more than a long sleeve tee underneath. but all the lengths, the arms, the torso, everything is just right. 3) I can wear this all day comfortably. You can go from 30 degrees and windy outside feeling comfortable, go inside, unzip it, and leave it on without getting sweaty or clammy. It's not a particularly loud fabric either, so it's not annoying to wear indoors. 4) Windstopper works. I've taken it on a few day hikes, one at Alta in October in the snow, and it was great. It sheds some water, keeps the wind out, offers minor warmth, and is really comfortable. It's kind of a jack of all trades, good at everything. I wouldn't use this as a rain jacket, or in freezing wind, or in anything sub-30's, but for anything else, it's great. (0) Flag evap103408 Member since Oct 28, 2012 Responded on November 24, 2013 what kind of base/mid layers are you wearing? I've been wearing a light-mid baselayer under my ROM on bike rides in low 30s and I'm finding I heat up and sweat pretty easy (though my body heats up pretty quick with just about any aerobic activity) (0) Flag gilipollas Member since Nov 2, 2011 Responded on November 28, 2013 I usually use just a t shirt underneath, as I head up pretty quickly when doing aerobic activity at all. You're right, you get sweaty, I think the point I was trying to make was that in comparison to Polartec PowerShield, I find this to be better. (0) Flag gilipollas Member since Nov 2, 2011 Best Answer Responded on November 21, 2013 The arms aren't as tight as they look in the photo. This jacket is listed as athletic fitting, but it's definitely not skin tight or anywhere close to that. I would recommend sizing down from your normal size, unless you want a lot of room to layer. I typically wear a medium (every once in a while, a small), and the small in this jacket fits like a medium in most other brands. (1) Flag hegaveitall Member since Jan 30, 2010 Responded on November 29, 2013 great, thanks! I would need a small also. (0) Flag Have an answer for hegaveitall? You only find this mix of different high tec materials on this product. The feeling is great, it is strong and durable and very resistant. But what I like the most about this jacket is how it differentiate from its competitors: it's a light and windproof jacket that has its best use while being active (=while you're body is producing heat). As long as you are active, this jacket will protect you from the wind and keep you DRY ! you won't sweat. A great product for trailer runners, but also snow enthusiasts. -Second, it looks awesome. The grey materials with the yellow zippers looks really cool, and you will enjoy wearing it around town on windy days. The only downside: the range motion of movement is not as good as Patagonia products. It is not very light and whereas many patagonia product, you will really feel the jacket on you. I am 6"1' - 190lb and the Large fits me great. It looks amazing and I love the longer cut. The sleeves run long, and that's my favorite part. I'm 6'4" 185lbs. The large fits great. It's worth mentioning that it's not a warm jacket unless you're active. If you plan on using it for casual walking, I wouldn't go any colder than 40 degress F. This was my biggest let down. I was really really excited about this being marketed as a windproof jacket, and that's not the case. The wind goes right through the sides and backs of the arms. The chest and back are windproof, but there are large patches of thin fabric that lets everything through. These run from the arm pit all the way to the waist. Also on the back of the arms running the whole length. Haven't been a huge softshell wearer but was looking for exactly what the ROM gave me. Blocks the wind like no other and sheds freezing rain on the lift. Great for use year-round. Runs large but tight in the arms. 6'0" 175lbs. (1) Flag Lucius Sulla Member since Jun 23, 2013 Responded on November 4, 2013 Hey what size are you wearing there? Seems like it works for just about anything. The angel wing design definitely allows for unrestricted ROM and adds to the "I forgot I had it on" fit. I wear it on runs, climbs and definitely plan to wear it for Spring tours. I picked up a down sweater to test on colder days this ski season and see how the kit performs. Seth Member since Feb 12, 2013 Posted on July 15, 2013 Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer Fit: True to size I've worn this piece as a stand alone shell (baselayer tshirt underneath), as a midlayer, an around town jacket, hiking, climbing, biking....I just can't get enough of it! Its nice and stretchy on sides and under the arms, it has nice long sleeves so when riding a bike it doesn't feel too short in the arms when outstretched, and it is long enough in the back to not ride up under a pack or harness! AND it is windproof! Love this jacket! when it wears out (hasn't even come close yet with 2 years of heavy use) I will buy another! I'd owned a Marmot softshell previously and often times was overheated and found it to be quite stiff and uncomfortable. The ROM has pleasantly surpassed my expectations. The biggest surprise for me was how comfortable it felt when I only had a t-shirt underneath during the warmer months. I've used this jacket for short runs, bike rides in colder weather, ice climbing and even winter canyoneering which is where i was really able to put it to the test. The temperatures were below 0F and we were trudging through powder up to our knees. On the climb up I was covered with snow and we started before the sun had crested the mountains. We were in those conditions for about 3 hours and the jacket performed great. I never got wet from the snow covering me and I didn't get cold as long as I was moving (when we stopped for longer periods of time I had to pull out my down jacket because of the extremely low temps). I'm 6'1" and 175 lbs. Usually I wear a Medium but because I have short arms for my height I went with a Small and it is quite possibly the best fitting jacket I own.
